29 January 2010 2010 North-South postgraduate scholarship scheme open for applications
Universities Ireland, which promotes collaboration between universities in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and the joint Business Council of the Confederation of British Industry (NI) and the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC), which promotes North-South business cooperation, are offering four - six scholarships to students undertaking a recognised Master's or the first year of a PhD programme (taught or research) in the other Irish jurisdiction. Dublin Institute of Technology is also a partner in this scheme, which is now in its sixth year.
9 December 2009 Inaugural North / South Research Forum meeting held
The inauguaral meeting of the North / South Research Forum, an initiative of the Centre for Cross Border Studies, one of the Ireland/Northern Ireland Cross-border Cooperation Observatory (INICCO) group of projects funded by the EU INTERREG IVA Programme, took place in Dundalk on Wednesday 9 December 2009, on the theme: What is the Future for Local Economic Development in the Context of the Global Economic Crisis? Keynote speakers were Ms Céline McHugh, Senior Policy Advisor, Forfás and Mr Michael Smyth, Head of School of Economics, University of Ulster.
1 December 2009 Director speaks at Strasbourg seminar on European border cooperation
Director Andy Pollak was one of the speakers at a seminar jointly organized at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Européennes (IHEE) in Strasbourg by the University of Strasbourg and the Euro-Institure in Kehl, Germany entitled Les régions tranfrontalières ‘sensibles’. He spoke on ‘Challenges and opportunities in cross-border cooperation in Ireland after the Northern Irish conflict’. Other speakers came from the Council of Europe, France, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine and Morocco.
19 November 2009 Director addresses Oireachtas Committee on the Good Friday Agreement
Director Andy Pollak addressed a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement in Dublin on the work of the Centre for Cross Border Studies and its associated bodies. The committee is chaired by Mr Noel Treacy (Fianna Fail), and among other TDs, senators and MLAs/MPs present were: SDLP leader Mr Mark Durkan MP MLA; Mr Caoimhghín O Caoláin TD and Mr Pat Doherty MP MLA of Sinn Fein; Mr Johnny Brady TD and Senator Cecilia Keaveney of Fianna Fail; Mr Seymour Crawford TD (Fine Gael) and Senator Ivana Bacik (Labour).
19 November 2009 Address to Irish-Scottish Forum on Spatial Planning
Director Andy Pollak addressed the Irish-Scottish Forum for Spatial Planning at National University of Ireland Maynooth (the forum brings together planners from University of Aberdeen, Queen’s University Belfast and NUI Maynooth). The seminar was entitled ‘Development Corridors and the role of Spatial Planning in Border Territories’ and Andy spoke on ‘Cross border cooperation in Ireland in a time of recession.’

22 October 2009 Address to the Pobal/Community Relations Council workshop ‘Across the Border and Back’
Director Andy Pollak addressed this workshop on cross-border working as part of the EU Peace Programme, organized jointly by Pobal and the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council, in the Tara Centre in Omagh. The audience consisted of members of local authority-led Peace and Reconciliation Partnerships in Northern Ireland and the Southern border region. His subject was: ‘What is the future for cross-border cooperation work in Ireland?’
21 October 2009 Director speaks at ICBAN board meeting
Director Andy Pollak addressed the board meeting in Omagh of the Irish Central Border Area Network, made up of councillors from Armagh, Dungannon and South Tyrone, Cookstown, Omagh, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Cavan, Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal. He spoke on ‘The Centre for Cross Border Studies and its work in the Irish Border Region.’

6 October 2009 CCBS Director addresses Brussels Open Days
On 6 October CCBS Director Andy Pollak addressed the Open Days workshop on ‘Local Cross-border Territories at the service of Citizens’ in the European Commission in Brussels. He was part of the EUROMOT (European network of cross-border local authorities) delegation coordinated by the French government’s Mission Opérationelle Transfrontalière (MOT) cross-border cooperation agency. The other speakers were Mr José Palma-Andres, Director of Territorial Cooperation of DG Regio in the European Commission; Dr Hans-Günter Clev, Director of MOT; Mr Peter Udvardi, Director of the EGTC Ister-Granum on the Hungarian-Slovakian border; and Mr Klaus Baldauf, in charge of international affairs in the city of Frankfurt/Oder (German-Polish border).
1 October 2009 Universities Ireland-IBEC-CBI North/South Masters Scholarship Winners
Four Universities Ireland/IBEC-CBI Joint Business Council North-South postgraduate scholarships for the academic year 2009-2010 have been awarded. Two of these scholarships, in subjects of interest to business, are jointly funded by Universities Ireland and two firms (RPS Group and Dublin Port), and two by Universities Ireland alone. They are worth €15,000 each.
14 September 2009 President McAleese hosts 10th birthday reception for Centre
To mark the 10th anniversary of the Centre opening its offices in Armagh, President McAleese hosted afternoon tea for the staff, board and selected friends of the Centre for Cross Border Studies at Áras an Uachtaráin. Among the guests were Dr Chris Gibson, Chairman of the Centre; Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, President of Dublin City University; Mr John Driscoll, Director of the International Centre for Local and Regional Development, and Professor John Coolahan, Professor Emeritus of Education at NUI Maynooth. The board and staff of the Centre would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to President McAleese for recognising and affirming its work for practical North/South and cross-border cooperation in this way.
3 September 2009 Irish-African Partnership seeks new Project Manager
The Irish African Partnership for Research Capacity Building (2007-2011) brings together all nine universities on the island of Ireland and four universities in Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi in a unique, high-level partnership to develop a coordinated approach to Research Capacity Building (RCB) in higher education institutions.
2 September 2009 Tender advertisement for cross-border hospital modelling research
The Centre for Cross Border Studies has been awarded funding from the EU INTERREG IVA Programme to carry out a ‘basket’ of research, training and information projects in 2009-2011, collectively entitled the Ireland/Northern Ireland Cross-border Cooperation Observatory (INICCO). One of the research projects funded is for the DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE MODELLING TOOL FOR HOSPITAL PLANNING ON A BORDER REGION AND ALL-ISLAND BASIS. The Centre, in partnership with the Institute of Public Health in Ireland, now invites tenders from suitably qualified researchers for this project, which will commence in October 2009 and must be completed no later than April 2011.
1 September 2009 Research articles sought for The Journal of Cross Border Studies in Ireland
The Centre is seeking high quality research articles on issues of practical cross-border co-operation to include in the 2010 edition of its Journal of Cross Border Studies in Ireland. The subject matter of such articles can cover a wide range of areas, including education, training, health, business and the economy, public administration, transport and communications, energy (including renewables), agriculture, planning, housing, community development, tourism, the arts and the environment. We accept articles about cross-border co-operation in Ireland and overseas. Those interested should submit a one page abstract to the director, Andy Pollak. If approved, the deadline for receipt of final articles will be in January 2010, for publication in March 2010. The Centre will pay £500/€650 for an article of 4,000-5,000 words. 26 June 2009 Tender advertisement for INICCO evaluation
The closing date for the receipt of tenders is no later than 4.00 pm on Thursday 30 July 2009. The evaluation will run for 28 months from September 2009 to the project end date, presently December 2011. It is noted that some of the final evaluation work may take place after the completion of the INICCO project.The successful applicant will be informed by 1 September 2009.
19 June 2009 Tender advertisement for Border Region Economy research project
The Centre for Cross Border Studies is seeking a researcher (or researchers) to carry out a package of four closely interrelated studies to find ways of understanding and increasing the accessibility, size, transparency, competitiveness and profitability of Irish Cross-Border Region markets in a post-conflict context but also in a period of international recession. This project is funded by the INTERREG IVA programme.
2 June 2009 Second phase of cross-border mobility information website launched in Armagh
The second phase of the pioneering Border People online information service (www.borderpeople.info) for people wishing to move across the Irish border to live, work and study will be launched in Armagh on Tuesday 2nd June. The service is managed by the Centre for Cross Border Studies in partnership with the North/South Ministerial Council and is funded by the EU INTERREG IVA programme. Border People, whose first phase was launched by the Deputy First Minister, Mr Martin McGuinness, in May 2008, is a public information website the first of its kind on the island of Ireland structured around the four themes of Commute, Work, Live and Study. It features sign-posting information on taxation, social security, job-seeking, qualifications, health, education, banking, telecommunications and other areas of interest to citizens moving across the border to live in the other Irish jurisdiction. The website’s second phase (2009-2011) will be further developed to meet the ever increasing demand for cross-border mobility information. It will be publicised through a multi-annual marketing campaign to bring it to the public’s notice, particularly in border regions.
11 May 2009 Third Irish-African Partnership Workshop, Maputo, Mozambique
The third Irish-African Partnership Workshop took place in the Mozambican capital, Maputo from 11-14 May 2009. It was opened by Mozambique’s Minister of Education and Culture, Dr Aires Bonifácio Ali, and the Rector of Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Professor Filipe José Couto. Other speakers at the opening ceremony were the Irish Ambassador, Mr Frank Sheridan, the UK High Commissioner, Mr Andrew Soper, and the President of University College Cork, Dr Michael Murphy.
29 April 2009 Second Cross-Border Schools Science Conference
The second Cross-Border Schools Science Conference (‘Discover the Stars at Armagh’) took place in Armagh on 29-30 April with over 250 students aged 13-14 from 14 schools in Belfast, Dublin, Armagh, Monaghan, Keady, Banbridge, Portadown, Carrickmacross, Dundalk, Drogheda and Westmeath. The partners in this initiative are Armagh Observatory, the Centre for Cross Border Studies, Armagh Planetarium and the Royal School Armagh.
