Border People User Group (3) - The Frontier Worker

The next seminar which will take place in the North West for the first time will look at issues facing frontier workers and businesses located in the border region.
Is the border a barrier to employment?
What are the obstacles to employment for those living in the border region?
Are there benefits to be had from crossing the border to work each day?
What are the issues for businesses working across the border?
The speakers confirmed so far, Michael Carr Co-ordinator EURES Cross-border Partnership and Lisa Fagan, Chartered Accountant, John McMahon & Co. have a wealth of knowledge and practical experience in this area.

Irish Foreign Minister to launch 2010 Journal of Cross Border Studies in Ireland

) Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheàl Martin will launch the 2010 edition of The Journal of Cross Border Studies in Ireland on 21 April in Dublin. The 2010 journal contains an interview with the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD, on North-South cooperation; an article by the novelist Colm Toibin on the Irish and Catalan borders; and articles on community development along the border; the most recent statistics on cross-border shopping; the Dissolving Boundaries ICT in education project; a Green New Deal for the island of Ireland; collaboration between University of Ulster and Letterkenny Institute of Technology; and the role of nationalism in creating a better Ireland.

Placement commences on North-South Student Teacher Exchange

The 2009-2010 North South Student Teacher Exchange Project will involve 19 students from six colleges of education: Stranmillis University College, Belfast; St Mary's University college, Belfast; St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin; Church of Ireland College of Education, Dublin; Coláiste Mhuire Marion, Dublin and Froebel College of Education , Blackrock, Co Dublin.
This project is funded by the Standing Conference on Teacher Education (SCoTENS) and managed by the Centre for cross Border Studies in Armagh, in partnership with the participating colleges. The project is run by a steering group drawn from the Centre and the colleges of education. It will build on the experience of the first five exchanges (2003-2008).

CCBS Director to address EU OPEN DAYS workshop

As part of the EU’s OPEN DAYS 2009, Director Andy Pollak will address a workshop under the theme ‘Territorial cooperation: Working together across borders’ in Brussels on 6 October. He will speak as part of a team assembled by the French government’s Mission Opérationelle Transfrontaliere (MOT) cross-border cooperation agency on how cross-border services in health, education and training and citizens information work (and might work better) to assist citizens of the Irish-Northern Irish border region. The workshop will take place in the European Commission, Centre Borschette, from 2.30-6.15 pm, and will also be addressed by the vice-president of MOT, Alain Lamassoure MEP, and speakers from the German-Polish and Hungarian-Slovakian border regions.

Nobel Peace Laureate to address Universities Ireland event
|

The 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr Shirin Ebadi from Iran, will address the launch of the Scholars at Risk Ireland Section, which is being run by Universities Ireland, in Trinity College Dublin on Tuesday 22 September. Scholars at Risk is an international network of higher education institutions committed to defending the rights of university scholars and academics worldwide, and providing international protection to those scholars persecuted in their own countries. Universities Ireland has agreed to become its Irish section.
