The fifth and final Irish-African Partnership for Research Capacity Building (IAP) conference and workshop took place at Queen’s University Belfast on Wednesday 29 September-Friday 1 October 2010. Among the keynote speakers will be the former Irish President Dr Mary Robinson; the former head of Tony Blair’s Commission for Africa, Professor Myles Wickstead; the Chief Executive of Concern, Tom Arnold; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Cape, Professor Brian O’Connell; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, Professor Yunus Mgaya; the former Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dick Spring; the founding Director of the International Network for Higher Education in Africa, Dr Damtew Teferra; Michael Hörig of the European University Association and Dr Garry Aslayan of the World Health Organisation.
The conference/workshop was opened by Sir Reg Empey MLA, Northern Ireland Minister for Employment and Learning, and Peter Power TD, Irish Minister of State for Overseas Development. The Centre for Cross Border Studies is a founding member of the IAP along with the nine universities on the island of Ireland, Makerere University in Uganda, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, University of Dar es Salaam and University of Malawi. Previous IAP workshops took place in Dublin, Entebbe (Uganda), Maputo (Mozambique) and Zomba (Malawi).
