Mapping Frontiers, Plotting Pathways: Routes to North/South Co-operation in a Divided Island

This was a two-year collaborative project, commissioned by the Higher Education Authority in the South, between University College Dublin (Institute for British-Irish Studies and the Geary Institute [formerly the Institute for the Study of Social Change]), Queen's University Belfast (Institute of Governance and Centre for International Borders Research), the Centre for Cross Border Studies and Democratic Dialogue.

The project consisted of three parts:

  1. Borders and their consequences: a comparative perspective (including attention to Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Cyprus, Sri Lanka, Tyrol, Alsace-Lorraine, Schleswig);
  2. The Irish border as a social divide, focusing on the political and administrative background and interchanges and transactions in the social, economic and cultural fields;
  3. Pathways for promoting cross-border contact, cooperation and mutual understanding:
    • mapping efforts to promote cross-border cooperation since the 1980s and
    • under arrangements arising from the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement; and
    • indicative in-depth studies to probe different forms of cross-border cooperation

The Centre contributed a discussion paper [225 KB] on cross-border cooperation in education and a mapping study of the extensive programmes and projects aimed at promoting cross-border co-operation on the island of Ireland.

The Centre also organised the final conference and the four study days.
